Transforming Dining Spaces: 5 Elements That Make for a Stunning Dining Room

At Brooke Lang Design, we believe the dining room is more than just a place to eat; it’s where memories are made and stories are shared. It’s a space that is also a blend beauty and functionality—just like any space in the house!

Here are five essential elements (plus our design tips!) to consider when transforming your dining room into a captivating, welcoming space to gather.

1. High-Contrast Color Palettes

Creating visual interest starts with color. High-contrast palettes, such as deep blues paired with crisp whites or bold blacks with warm woods, can elevate your dining room's aesthetic. These combinations not only add depth but also create a striking backdrop for the space.

In our Oakdale Elegance project (below), we paired a soft, rich charcoal-gray velvet dining chair with a light hand-painted wallpaper, resulting in a beautifully balanced look that draws the eye.

2. Statement Lighting“What shape of fixture should I get?”

It’s no secret that at BLD, we absolutely LOVE a great light fixture. It’s one of the hallmarks of our design style and in a dining room, it can quickly become the focal point. Whether it’s an elegant chandelier or a modern pendant light, the right lighting not only enhances the ambiance but also makes the space feel special for every meal.

When you’re choosing a fixture for your space, keep in mind the shape of the fixture that you’re choosing. We usually suggest mimicking the shape of your table. So if you' have a long, rectangular shaped table, look for a linear chandelier.

In our West Loop Project (below), we used a circular chandelier, which mimicked the shape of the circular table and made this open concept dining room feel put together and cohesive.

3. Rich Textures and Fabrics

Incorporating a variety of textures adds warmth and richness to your dining room…plush upholstered chairs, woven table linens, and textured wall coverings. In our Houston Townhome project (below), we paired a dark wood table with crisp white upholstered chairs. The combination of these elements created a dynamic interplay that not only enhanced the room’s aesthetic but also fostered an inviting and comfortable dining experience.

4. Functional Layouts: Flow and Comfort

Designing a layout that encourages conversation is key to an enjoyable dining experience. The key to this is to ensure that there’s enough space around the table for guests to move freely. If the dining space is small, choose chairs that have a straighter back to help save on space!

5. Add Personal Touches that Reflect Your Story

Incorporate personal elements that tell your family story—whether it’s a beloved piece of art, cherished heirlooms, or meaningful decor items. These touches make your dining space uniquely yours and invite guests to engage with your history. If space is limited and a credenza or display shelf isn’t an option, consider adding a fun wallpaper with a striking pattern to create a sense of individuality and charm.

Ultimately, your dining space should be a cherished space where family and friends come together to spend time together. By incorporating these design elements, you can create a beautiful, welcoming environment that fosters connection and invites loved ones to gather, share stories, and create lasting memories around the table.
